How a time-honored weapon of statecraft has become a debilitating disease.
“We have never been more divided.” That’s the bar-stool truism that we seem to have embraced, and the evidence of our divisions is not hard to find. At this point it’s banal to point it out. We accept our divided state like we might accept a chronic illness or a battle wound that won’t heal. But we should not accept it.
